Scilla has traced 10 ‘new’ values on which many leaders have traditionally based their decisions, but which she maintains are now being replaced by leaders who are ahead of the curve. One example is that ‘Might Makes Right’ is being replaced by ‘Talking Trumps Fighting’. In the 1990s, for the first time, more wars ended by negotiated settlement (42) than by military victory (23). This started a trend that accelerated in the new millennium. Between 2000 and 2005, seventeen conflicts ended in negotiated settlements; just four ended in military victory.
The emergence of these new values replacing the old were discussed in a packed committee room in the House of Lords on November 3rd with Lord Alderdice, a psychiatrist and psychotherapist who played a significant role in Irish Peace Process and continues to work on the challenge of intractable conflict in various parts of the world.”
